Story from Betty Hanebeck about the Fire
Betty's father, Royal Daniel (Paddy) received money from the fire. Betty, his favorite, wanted a pair of red shoes purchsed even tho they were too small. che kept them under her pillow.
Many people died during the fire, according to Betty. Some people thought they would be save with their children in their root cellar. But they suffocated in the fire.
Betty Hanebeck remembers a story her father told
Royal Daniel told the story that their father was asked to have a garage moved from one side of the house to the other. When he and the sons had completed the task (they were charging $20.00) the man said that the price was too high for such quick work, and refused to pay., It seems that they began to get the crew to work on jacking up the garage again. The owner asked "what are you doing?" The reply was "since you don't want to pay the price, I'll return the gargae where it was." The owner give in and paid the price.
